Primary School Sport & Health Programme

Partnership Structure

SSP Structure

School Sport Partnerships (SSP’s) were introduced in 2000 to support the delivery of the Government’s Sport Strategy. The main aim of an SSP is to increase sporting opportunities for all young people between the ages of 5-16 through coordinated, high quality physical education lessons and out of school hours learning activities which link to local community clubs and development programmes.

More than £459 million has been invested in SSP’s thus ensuring that every school in England is linked to this programme.

Each SSP is organised as follows:
Infant, Junior, Primary and Special Schools link up with their local secondary school to create a cluster. The clusters (usually 6) create the School Sport Partnership (SSP). Each SSP is based around a Sports College.

The City Academy Bristol is the Sports College around which our SSP is based. We have 6 secondary schools, 8 junior schools, 8 infant schools, 17 primary schools and 4 special schools.

Who does what?

Within each Sports College there is a Partnership Development Manager (PDM). It is their job to oversee the management of the whole SSP. Each secondary school has a School Sport Coordinator (SSCo). This person is a qualified and experienced PE teacher who is released from school for 2 days each week to fulfil their SSCo role.

Each Primary School has a Primary Link Teacher (PLT). This person is funded for release time each academic year to fulfil their role.
